Pregnancy Weight Loss Help: New In The News
Tummy Fat Related to Number of Pregnancies
Tummy Fat
Yes, tummy fat after pregnancy is associated with number of pregnancies a woman has had.
The more babies a woman has had the higher the risk of central obesity after pregnancy with increased waist line, according to this study from Finland.
With current rates of obesity in the West, more is being done to identify trends and associations. It appears women having more than 3 children are likely to be obese around their tummy.
This is the apple-type obesity, associated with diabetes and heart disease. (more…)
Cookery Courses Helped Long Term Weight Loss.
Cookery Lessons
Want to lose weight? Then take some cooking lessons.
Ways and means to encourage weight loss are constantly being sought. Would teaching better cooking practices to obese people improve their weight loss outcomes?
A study published recently compared two groups of people interested in losing weight. One group was taught better cooking skills and the other was offered some psychological skills through neurolinguistic programming therapy (NLP).
Both groups lost weight but the cookery group stuck with it longer three years later.
Pregnancy Obesity Prevents Breast Feeding
Breast Feeding
Breast feeding is important for the infant and can also help in weight loss after
pregnancy and mother-baby bonding.
However, the paper reviewed here shows that mothers who are overweight or obese before or during pregnancy were less likely to breast feed.
Not breast feeding denies the baby the early immunological defence only available through breast milk.
Excessive Pregnancy Weight Gain leads to Teenage Obesity
If you have been following posts from us, you will be aware how pre-pregnancy obesity and excessive pregnancy weight gaininfluences pregnancy outcomes.
Pregnancy obesity and excessive weight gain during pregnancy are associated with several negative outcomes including poor growth of baby, caesarean section, and chronic diseases in the child for life.
In this international scientific study, proof is presented that maternal obesity and excessive weight gain in the first 20 weeks predisposes to childhood obesity for a long time.
Bite Size Device Trick For Weight Loss
Weight Loss After Pregnancy
An oral bite size device trick could be useful for weight loss after pregnancy
You are aware of the various surgical procedures for weight loss before or after
pregnancy. Weight loss surgery has been shown to be effective for obese individuals who are unable to control their food intake by normal means.
Now here comes something very ingenious. A simple device is placed in the mouth at meal times aids weight loss and could work to help women lose weight after pregnancy. The wearer is made to eat slowly and chew food more thoroughly.
A recent study shows that users of the oral device lost more weight with minimal complications.
Culturally Sensitive Weight Loss Program Success Story
Weight Loss Program
A culturally sensitive weight loss program is proven to succeed in an ethnic environment.
A Weight loss program that ignores social and cultural norms is unlikely to succeed. This statement is based on the assumption that our eating habits and lifestyle are closely associated with our cultural environment.
This is an important consideration for authorities to take into account when setting up the appropriate weight loss program, for women in particular.
This is why researchers in USA developed and tested a culturally sensitive weight loss program for women.
To read more about how effective a culturally sensitive weight loss program helped Spanish speaking Mexican women go here:
Culturally Sensitive Weight Loss Program Success Story
excerpt:
This study assessed the feasibility of a culturally-appropriate weight-loss intervention targeting obese Spanish-speaking Mexican women.
This 12-month weight-loss program was based on behavioral interventions previously used successfully with English-speaking participants.
Cultural adaptations included: female interventionists, minimal written materials, emphasis on group activities, focus on Mexican traditions and beliefs, and skill-building approach to food measurement.
Mean weight loss at 6 and 12 months was 5.3 and 7.2 kg, respectively, with a mean reduction in BMI of 4.0 and 5.5 kg/m(2) from baseline to 6 and 12 months, respectively.
This pilot study shows that it is feasible to develop and implement culturally-appropriate behavioral lifestyle interventions for obesity treatment in Mexican-American women.
Like US and Canada, the UK is multicultural with diverse cultures that influence physical activity and eating practices.
The type of food, how it is cooked and patterns of eating do influence weight gain. Asian women, in particular, though prone to obesity and diabetes, eat high fat containing foods and exercise less frequently compared to some other cultural groups. However, this is not the only group that is strongly influenced by culture.
In order to win the obesity epidemic war, authorities need to take into account cultural factors that would impede or even improve the success of a weight loss program.

Pregnancy Obesity Increases Risk of Death of Baby In Womb
Pregnancy Obesity
Pregnancy obesity is associated with several problems including high blood pressure in the mother and poor growth of the baby.
The discussion in this publication from Florida, centres on the impact of pregnancy obesity on the death of baby before birth.
It appears that the risk of death of baby in the womb is closely associated with obesity, that is, the higher the obesity, the higher the risk.
To read more about how obesity negatively impacts on the outcome of pregnancy go here.
Pregnancy obesity leads to baby’s death in the womb
excerpt:
The current obesity epidemic appears to contribute significantly to adverse fetal outcomes, and in this work we compile up-to-date evidence for the link between maternal obesity and risk of stillbirth.
The review revealed a preponderance of evidence showing that the risk of stillbirth is increased among obese mothers with amplified risk estimates as the severity of obesity increases.
The literature has predominantly reported a strong association between maternal prepregnancy obesity and stillbirth.
Obesity in pregnancy is a major issue.
On top of the many problems to the mother and baby, the scientific paper reported here has shown that risk of death of baby is proportional to the degree of obesity. It is worst in twin pregnancy.
Unfortunately, it known that weight in between pregnancies goes up steadily with time. This is why it is important to make an effort to lose pregnancy weight in between pregnancies.
Losing pregnancy weight might not be easy, but simple steps, like walking daily does work. We do support women to lose weight after pregnancy. For more information, please subscribe to our newsletter.

Healthy Pregnancy Nutrition Prevents Facial Defects
Healthy Pregnancy Nutrition
Facial defects including hare lip, are preventable by healthy pregnancy nutrition. In a study published recently Carmichael and Colleagues highlight the importance of healthy eating in pregnancy in the prevention of defects of the face in the baby.
You may be aware of current advice that folic acid supplements does exactly the same thing. What you may not be aware of is the controversy surrounding the option of adding folic in bread and other foods, so women take enough of this vitamin over a long time.
The debate rages on because some campaigners feel supplementation takes away a woman’s choice. Fair enough.

Reduced risks of neural tube defects and orofacial clefts with higher diet quality.
To examine whether better maternal diet quality was associated with reduced risk for selected birth defects.
Analyses included 936 cases with neural tube defects (NTDs), 2475 with orofacial clefts, and 6147 nonmalformed controls.
Healthier maternal dietary patterns, as measured by diet quality scores, were associated with reduced risks of NTDs and clefts.
These results suggest that dietary approaches could lead to further reduction in risks of major birth defects and complement existing efforts to fortify foods and encourage periconceptional multivitamin use.
“Healthy pregnancy nutrition is good for pregnant women”…this is not news or is it?
What do you think would the state of our health if we believed for a day that eating well is good for us?
The truth is that although certain facts are known and have been known for a long time, like healthy pregnancy nutrition, exercise and not smoking during pregnancy, millions of pregnant women fail to observe these “simple” things.
The other truth is that implementing any of these “simple” life style measures is extremely difficult.

Limiting Pregnancy Weight Gain Study
Pregnancy Weight Gain
This may not be the news you expected…an experiment to find out what helps women not
gain too much weight during pregnancy.
Is this not we should all be doing? I mean those of us in the position of caring for pregnancy women.
The world waits to hear what the outcome will be of this study helping women limit pregnancy weight.
Limiting Pregnancy Weight Study
Obesity and excessive weight gain during pregnancy are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes.
This report describes the design of Healthy Moms, a randomized trial testing a weekly, group-based, weight management intervention designed to help limit GWG to 3% of weight (measured at the time of randomization) among obese pregnant women (BMI≥30kg/m(2)).
Additional secondary outcomes include weight change between randomization and one-year postpartum and proportion of infants with birth weight>90th percentile for gestational age.
It is premature to state what I expect this study to find. There have been many studies that shown that weight loss is aided significantly by merely focusing attention of an individual on calories and activity.
You may have read a book “Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think, by Brian
Wansink” which really reflects upon how we eat a lot and unintentionally lots of the wrong food.
When someone who desires to lose weight focuses on what amount and kind of food he or she is eating, often they eat less and lose weight.
I do hope this study will go deeper into finding out what works and why it works – when it comes to limiting pregnancy weight gain.

Exercise during pregnancy – Protects Your Bones
Exercise During Pregnancy
Exercise During Pregnancy – Protects Your Bones Advantage Confirmed
Bones lose their mass during pregnancy as part of the normal adaptational change. The good news being reported here is that exercise during pregnancy seems to protect bones from the physiological bone loss.
The advantages are not restricted to the bones, though.
To read more about the finding of how exercise during pregnancy affects a pregnant woman’s bones go here.
Exercise During Pregnancy Protects Your Bones
Excerpt:
To evaluate whether bone mineral density (BMD) changes in women engaged in active exercises during pregnancy would be different from non-exercising women.
A total of 24 physically active women undergoing active physical training of over 10 h per week at 20 weeks gestation and beyond (mean 13.1 h, SD 3.3) were compared to 94 non-exercising low-risk women.
In women actively engaged in physical training during pregnancy, the physiological fall in BMD during pregnancy was apparently less compared to those who did not regularly exercise.
Several reviews on this site have pointed out the benefits of exercise during pregnancy. Added today is the report that confirms apparent protection of the pregnant woman’s bones if she exercises.
Women who exercise during pregnancy tend to be fitter, gain less pregnancy weight, have fewer complications during pregnancy and during labour.
Pregnancy naturally leads to loss of bone mass, but the consequences are not immediately obvious. In some cases, the mass is not regained, particularly with recurrent pregnancies, poor nutrition and smoking.
It has also been shown in other studies that obese women tend to lose less bone mass during pregnancy.
Did you exercise during pregnancy? What was your best exercise? Would you like to share your experience here?
